Overview

We are seeking an experienced Chemical Engineer (5-10 years) with a strong background in combustion systems, exhaust flows, and process optimization. This role is critical to improving the performance of our natural gas-fired furnaces and ovens, stack exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and chemical processes associated with pickling, metal coaters, and painting operations. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with practical problem-solving and a collaborative approach to drive efficiency, safety, and compliance.

This role will be 100% onsite initially with potential to be hybrid based on business needs.

Duties
  • Analyze, optimize, and maintain combustion systems for industrial furnaces and ovens, ensuring fuel efficiency, emissions control, and compliance with NFPA and environmental standards.
  • Evaluate and improve gas flows, stack exhaust systems, and ductwork, including calculations for exhaust volumes, draft, and fan/blower performance.
  • Optimize heat exchangers and energy recovery systems to reduce fuel consumption and improve thermal efficiency.
  • Support chemical process improvements in pickling, metallic coating, and painting operations, focusing on safe handling, efficiency, and waste minimization.
  • Monitor and interpret emissions and flue gas data (O₂, CO, CO₂, NOx, VOCs) to guide tuning and corrective actions.
  • Develop and implement process control strategies to reduce quality losses, improve resource utilization, and ensure consistent performance.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and cost analyses for combustion and process improvement projects, balancing efficiency, compliance, and ROI.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and project teams to deliver practical solutions that support production goals.
  • Prepare reports and technical presentations to communicate findings, recommendations, and progress to stakeholders.
  • Stay current on industry standards and advancements in combustion, exhaust, and environmental technologies.
Minimum:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related Engineering studies.
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience as a Chemical Engineer in an industrial environment.
  • Strong understanding of chemical processes, thermodynamics, and reaction engineering.
  • Proficiency in process simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS).
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and environmental compliance.
Preferred:
  • Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering or related Engineering studies.
  • 10 years of demonstrated experience as a Chemical Engineer in an industrial environment.
Skills
  • Proven experience in combustion tuning, flue gas analysis, and efficiency improvement.
  • Ability to design and calculate exhaust flows, duct systems, and ventilation requirements.
  • Use of PipeSim or equivalent for development of pipe and ducting sizing calculations.
  • Familiarity with environmental compliance regulations (EPA, local air quality, NFPA standards).
  • Proficiency with process modeling and engineering tools (Aspen/HYSYS, CHEMCAD, CFD software, or equivalent).
  • Capability in understanding and developing PID's and PFD's
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills, with proficiency in Excel, Mathcad, Python, or similar tools.
  • Effective communicator and collaborator, with experience working alongside operations, maintenance, and project teams.
  • Ability to perform field measurements and inspections in an industrial environment, including working around heavy machinery and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to climb ladders and multiple-level stairs as part of on-site engineering work.
